Holidays in Suffolk

An article about holidays in Suffolk would not be complete without at least a cursory mention of food and drink. Suffolk is England’s pantry after all. Where other places have their wild life safaris, Suffolk offers its very own food safari. You will find here some quite wonderful culinary delights all literally, on your doorstep. Farmers markets abound in the area with two particularly good ones at Alder Carr Farm in Creeting St Mary and at Jimmy’s Farm just outside of Ipswich.

Jimmy's is a working farm and home to the rare breed Essex Pig. It is open daily and there’s loads to do for a great family day out. There’s a nature trail, a woodland walk, some quite beautiful gardens, a farm shop, an adventure play area and a field kitchen. You can buy home reared free range pork, beef and lamb at the farm’s butchers as well as an abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables from the gardens, all of which will be just perfect for your barbecue or dining table back at your lodge.

Alder Carr is also a working farm and it holds farmers markets regularly. You can pick your own fruit in season and sample some of the famous Alder Carr ice cream. There’s a farm shop, the barn café and a collection of craft shops to peruse, you can even hire bikes from here and go on your own little cycling tour of Suffolk. Like Jimmy’s, there’s always plenty going on so it’ll be well worth the trip.

A little closer to home are the old market towns of Woodbridge and Framlingham. These two are not to be missed. Woodbridge for its ancient tide mill and vintage and contemporary markets and Framlingham for is “oh so quaint”, olde worlde feel, its castle and its guided tours.

The Suffolk Food Hall, near Ipswich, showcases high quality, local foods with a food hall that is full to bursting with “deli” delights and an extensive variety of locally grown fresh vegetables. It also stocks a selection of cheeses, fine wines, freshly baked cakes and biscuits, marinades, specialist oils and other gourmet goodies just waiting to find their way onto the griddle pan or into your dessert bowls.

If all this talk of food is making you hungry, it’s relaxing and reassuring to know that all you need do is load your fresh farm produce into the back of the car, drive back to your holiday lodge home from home and decide whether to fire up the BBQ, or prepare a hearty supper in your own modern and fully equipped kitchen.
