We’ve also reached the finals in the Tourism in Suffolk Awards “Best Self Catering Establishment” category and been awarded the Cyclists, Walkers and Families Welcome accolades by Visit England. We try hard to maintain the highest standards and our guests regularly comment on this and how much they enjoy their visits. Many of them return time and again for that very reason.

Why take a holiday in England?

There is so much to see and do, literally right here on your doorstep, you don’t have to wait around for hours at airports or ferry terminals for tedious, uncomfortable journeys to far flung places just so you can say you’ve been on holiday. The English countryside is up there with the best of them, in terms of its richness and diversity. You don’t have to battle with language barriers or worry about exchange rates, you don’t even have to worry about whether it’s safe to drink the water. You can simply load up the car and within a relatively short time, be safely ensconced in your own private haven, far from madding crowds and the ever ringing telephone.

The English countryside is beautiful

The English countryside is beautiful and what better way to see it in all its glory, than to actually get out in it?
The flora and fauna of this country is as diverse as it is interesting and it is a joy to wander in the woods and watch the fields as the changing seasons alter the colours and patterns of our landscape. Our wildlife varies dramatically from one region to another, birds, animals and even plants and flowers that may thrive in one area, may all but disappear in another, only to be replaced by other equally fascinating species or varieties.

Wildlife aside the simple joy of getting out into the fresh air cannot be underestimated. How nice it is to be able to switch off, to clear your head of all the pressures of work, to forget for a short time at least about deadlines and get away from all those pestering emails. To go for long leisurely walks with nothing to worry about save where your foot will fall next, safe in the knowledge that wherever it falls, it’ll bring you one step closer to an English country pub. Dotted throughout the land, the great English hostelry makes the ideal stopping off point should you need to quench your thirst or feel a bit peckish. English pub grub is world famous and for all the right reasons.

Loads to do for the whole family

Whatever your age or fitness level, there are plenty of activities for the whole family. From walking to cycling for pleasure through to fishing and boating on lakes, with these pass times, you can while away the hours in gentle contemplation. If you prefer to take your sport a bit more seriously, you can go for a jog or get involved in any of the more competitive sports available. Many people when they are away on holiday like nothing more than simply lounging around with a good book. If this is your idea of holiday heaven then the beautiful English countryside awaits to form a relaxing backdrop to your imaginings.

Stay in a log cabin and get close to nature

On a log cabin holiday with Windmill Lodges you can literally step out of your cabin and go for a walk in the some of the most beautiful countryside in England. Our lodges are set deep in the heart of the Suffolk countryside in the rural village of Saxtead, not far from the ancient market towns of Woodbridge and Framlingham. There are many acres of woodland and open country to explore and the area is criss-crossed by public footpaths, bridle paths and country lanes with achingly good views over farmland and fields.

Stay in a log cabin and keep nice and warm

Wood is a very good insulating material in its own right. Add to this the modern building techniques which are employed in their construction, which are designed to conserve energy and and a log cabin is lovely and snug in winter yet also cool and comfortable in summer. Each of our lodges is fitted with a gas log effect fire and under floor heating to keep you lovely and warm, even in the coldest of days and we supply warm fluffy bathrobes and towels to add to your comfort.

Stay in a log cabin and holiday in the lap of luxury

Log cabins have come a long way in recent times. They now offer a standard of accommodation that rivals even the best hotels and guest houses and the log cabins at Windmill Lodges are no exception. All our lodges are furnished and maintained to the highest standards and have won awards in many categories. The kitchens and bathrooms are modern and well equipped, featuring everything you’d expect to make your stay as comfortable as possible and they are fully heated with gas log effect fires and under floor heating. The under floor heating is a real bonus, especially in the winter as it heats the floor, making it inviting to step out of bed on to. Each of our log cabins also comes equipped with its very own private, high spec outside hot tub, perfect for relaxing those muscles that ache from all the walking you’ve been doing or for unwinding while sipping champagne of an evening, as you stare up at the stars in wistful contemplation.

Holidays in Suffolk

An article about holidays in Suffolk would not be complete without at least a cursory mention of food and drink. Suffolk is England’s pantry after all. Where other places have their wild life safaris, Suffolk offers its very own food safari. You will find here some quite wonderful culinary delights all literally, on your doorstep. Farmers markets abound in the area with two particularly good ones at Alder Carr Farm in Creeting St Mary and at Jimmy’s Farm just outside of Ipswich.

Jimmy's is a working farm and home to the rare breed Essex Pig. It is open daily and there’s loads to do for a great family day out. There’s a nature trail, a woodland walk, some quite beautiful gardens, a farm shop, an adventure play area and a field kitchen. You can buy home reared free range pork, beef and lamb at the farm’s butchers as well as an abundance of fresh herbs and vegetables from the gardens, all of which will be just perfect for your barbecue or dining table back at your lodge.

Alder Carr is also a working farm and it holds farmers markets regularly. You can pick your own fruit in season and sample some of the famous Alder Carr ice cream. There’s a farm shop, the barn cafĂ© and a collection of craft shops to peruse, you can even hire bikes from here and go on your own little cycling tour of Suffolk. Like Jimmy’s, there’s always plenty going on so it’ll be well worth the trip.

A little closer to home are the old market towns of Woodbridge and Framlingham. These two are not to be missed. Woodbridge for its ancient tide mill and vintage and contemporary markets and Framlingham for is “oh so quaint”, olde worlde feel, its castle and its guided tours.

The Suffolk Food Hall, near Ipswich, showcases high quality, local foods with a food hall that is full to bursting with “deli” delights and an extensive variety of locally grown fresh vegetables. It also stocks a selection of cheeses, fine wines, freshly baked cakes and biscuits, marinades, specialist oils and other gourmet goodies just waiting to find their way onto the griddle pan or into your dessert bowls.

If all this talk of food is making you hungry, it’s relaxing and reassuring to know that all you need do is load your fresh farm produce into the back of the car, drive back to your holiday lodge home from home and decide whether to fire up the BBQ, or prepare a hearty supper in your own modern and fully equipped kitchen.
